Three Wheeled Buggies

Whether you're seeking a buggy to run around in or a nifty stroller to tackle neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies offer great mobility. Their compact design makes it easy to maneuver even in tight places.

For an easy ride, opt for a pram with air-filled tyres and look for models with 360deg front swivel wheels. They are susceptible, however, to punctures. Be prepared with a repair set.

Frame made of sturdy material

New figures show that three-wheeled buggies that were the symbol of the decade that had more money than common sense, are in a steep decline. They have been replaced by four-wheelers that are able to be more versatile in terrain, while also looking swanky and being easy to push.

The basic idea is that the bigger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with rough ground and bumpy pavements. The larger wheels, both front and rear allow you to maneuver and more stable while walking downhill or over difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tested this buggy with a newborn baby and a toddler and found it very robust. It was able to withstand cobbles, grass and rough pavements, aswell as dirt tracks and kerbs. She said "it is sturdy to push and extremely solid when traversing difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable, so require occasionally pumping) come with suspension built-in which was extremely comfortable for my kids.

Another thing to think about is the seat size and shape. You will want it to be big enough for your child's comfort and you will also want it to be able to recline for them to lie flat. Certain three-wheel buggies have a full lie-flat option while others will only allow an adult facing one.

The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road or muddy walks. It can be used as a single from birth, and then expands to take two children when your family grows. It is suitable for babies and toddlers up to age 4 and includes a bumper bar, raincover, improved 5-point harness and large cushioned seat. Storage options are also great, with a large basket and zip pockets on the hood and an attractive pouch on the rear of the seat unit.

Larger wheels

Larger wheels will give your buggy more stability when driving over rough terrain. This is perfect for buggies designed for off-road use. They also help you maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have swivel front wheels to help you navigate around corners with ease, whereas others are designed for running and come with fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability at which they can be driven. This is particularly useful when you bump against a tree or a kerb. The front wheel can be lifted slightly to prevent hitting it.

A lot of 3 wheel pushchairs have air filled tyres which means they can be used on a variety of terrains and are much more flexible than 4-wheeler. They also tend to be lighter. They are prone to punctures, and you'll need to have an repair kit and spare inner tube on hand.

Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and Venicci Carbo lux are some of our favourite jogging 3 wheel stroller-wheelers. These buggies, as per MFM's Kath, have larger wheels that according to her "perform well on grass, gravel roads and market town cobbles" and are able to go up or down kerbs. They also have a suspension system which in her words "smoothes out bumps with great efficiency".

Buggies with bigger wheels can be quite large, and can be difficult to fit in tight spaces. This is a problem especially if you're using it to an exercise bike or to to get through narrow doorways when out and out and about. Fortunately, the majority of models come with compact folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels to create more compact storage.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the primary benefits of a three-wheel buggy is that it can be much more maneuverable particularly with a child in tow. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels can be turned on a dime and are easy to move, making them ideal for terrains that are difficult, such as parks, cobblestones, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler with her newborn and toddler and stated: "The Terrain was a delight to maneuver on the terrain with the swivel rear wheel particularly useful. I was also impressed by the way it handled bumps, particularly when using the hand-operated brake. I found it extremely stable when driving downhill or over uneven terrain."

The only drawback of this incredible maneuverability is that the 3 wheeler pushchair off road wheel buggy's larger wheels sometimes mean that it will struggle in tight spaces - something to be aware of especially if you live in a metropolitan region. If this is an issue then a 4-wheeled buggy could be the better choice for you.

Bumper bar

Kath the MFM reviewer, also appreciated the space of the buggy. There's a huge, easily accessible basket that's surprisingly roomy for a buggy this small, plus there's a handy zipped pouch on the rear of the seat and two smaller mesh pockets inside the hood to keep your phone and keys.
