The Band Toto Asia

Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet format of previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort that had an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper and less cloned previously recorded performances.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released their new studio album just a few months after, and went on a world tour to promote it. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
