    How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

    In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

    1. Engine Speed Sensor

    The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

    The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

    If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

    It can be a bit difficult to test since there are different pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

    2. Injectors

    Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero Ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

    I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The replacement car key audi is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

    I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid I might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

    3. Fuel Pump

    The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

    4. ECU

    Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

    A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They're cheap and easy to find particularly when they're a Bosch unit like ours.     5. Tachometer
