This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

    1. Engine Speed Sensor

    The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

    The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

    If this sensor fails the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

    Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions but the most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

    2. Injectors

    Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

    I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

    I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

    3. Fuel Pump

    The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector).     4. ECU

    Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this.
