3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheeled buggy is ideal for off-roading and provides an easy ride for babies. They are also easier to push and manoeuvre than a four-wheeler especially those equipped with fabric slings or modular seat units that are tightly positioned in the frame to provide the most efficient shape and weight distribution.

Stability

Three-wheeled vehicles are very stable, which makes them an ideal option for off-road walks (especially when they are equipped with a seat that is all-terrain or off-road). They typically have larger front wheels, which can cope well with bumps and kerbs and rough ground. Some even come with a lockable front wheel for extra stability on uneven terrain.

It's important to remember that 3-wheel buggies have a lower center of gravity than their 4-wheeled counterparts and, therefore, could fall more easily. However, the most reliable 3-wheel pushchairs have an ideal geometry and design to ensure that they remain solid in all conditions. They should be able of turning at a whim and be easy to steer with one hand, and feature a 360o swivelling front wheel which makes them perfect for maneuvering and navigating challenging terrain.

Look for models with pneumatic tyres. These are made to work on tracks that are not paved, and should be able to take on rocks, mud, gravel and other debris. Many all-terrain buggies come with a swivelling wheel on the front that can be locked to provide greater stability when dealing with rough terrain.

They're also ideal for jogging as they're equipped with suspension and are easy to move up and down kerbs. However, the downside is that they are quite heavy to push.

This design provides an lower centre of gravity and a perfect height, making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you should never underestimate the amount of times you'll have to do that as new parents!)

Seating

The capacity for 3 wheelers is impressive and there are a variety of different options to pick from. The carrycot that comes with it is ideal for a newborn (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a comfortable and cosy lie-flat bed that can be used both in and out of the buggy). Older babies and toddlers will love the spacious and comfortable seat unit with adjustable ventilation. It's important to note that these seats aren't fully reclined, but they can be adjusted to the lowest setting which should still give your child plenty of headroom and room to move around.

A sling seat made of fabric is also available. It offers the advantage of being positioned snugly inside the frame instead of over the top of a modular seat and this delivers a much lower centre of gravity and perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push, especially when you're on bumpy terrain or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath really liked the way this kind of seat negotiated these challenges.

In addition to a large shopping basket, this kind of buggy typically has some quite useful features, such as an extendable 50+ UV hood, a simple brake pedal, and a few games-changing visibility lights that come up from the handlebar and can be placed directly in front of the occupants to ensure their safety when traversing difficult terrain.

The 3-wheeled frame is much more sturdy and can be moved with one hand. It's also better for terrain that is difficult. However, it means that the basket won't hold as much as a 4-wheeler buggy.

A high-quality ATP will have pneumatic tyres, a padded grip for added comfort, and a superb suspension. It will also be equipped with car seats and a carrycot which means you can use it from the moment you are born.

MFM's reviewers have found that the 3-wheeler frame won't fit through all the doors of their homes or small car booties - make sure you check the dimensions of the buggy once it's folded before purchasing in case you're concerned about space.

It's worth looking into an SUV with three wheels that can fit two (or even 3!) seats once your family grows. These are the most efficient of both and future proof your money. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is one of the most popular. It can be used from the day of birth as a single buggy and later transformed into twin buggies once your baby begins walking.

Tyres

These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's journey more comfortable. They are commonly found on pushchairs like the Phil & Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath found to be "an exceptional ride for my toddler". She also mentioned that the grippy tires of the Phil and Ted's Sport made it easy for her to maneuver around the kerbs as well as other obstacles.

These tyres are sometimes tricky to keep inflated and will need to be filled regularly. These tyres are more susceptible to punctures, which is why you should always have a repair kit as well as an spare inner tube with you when you're out and about.

PU tyres are more commonly used on pushchairs since they are a cheaper option than air-filled tyres, but they are equally robust. You can identify PU tire treads by their matte appearance and soft texture. They also glide well on smooth and tightly woven surfaces.
