Saab Key Replacement

Car keys being stolen or lost can be very frustrating. If you have a spare key, adding a new key to your car is relatively cheap and easy.

To add the new key, you will need remove the electronic components from your old key fob and get it programmed to your car using a Saab tech 2 device. You'll pay a fee for putting off this process.

Keys Lost key Replacement or stolen

The car key is the same easy to duplicate as it was twenty years ago. Modern keys are equipped with an electronic chip. These chips offer a great amount of protection against key theft and copying. However, this does not mean that you will never lose your key.

If you do lose your keys, don't panic! The first thing you must do is check the places where you usually keep your keys. You might find them in your pockets for your jacket, pants or even on the ground next to your front entrance. If you still can't find your keys, contact a locksmith to come to your car and assist you in finding keys.

A dealer can make you a new car key if all keys are missing. This can be costly and take several days to complete. Instead we can reprogram the existing computer's EEPROM to save you money.

Lockouts

Saab owners are advised to always have a spare key on hand, since it's much simpler to replace a lost or stolen one. If you only lose one key, it is a different story. If the issue continues to persist after having checked all of these, you may want to try reprogramming your ignition key. This is done by changing (in reverse Hex) the number count to zero in the ECU. You will need to open the case of your key fob to do this. This can be accomplished by removing your emergency key from the fob. Once this is done you can use a flathead screwdriver to open the case and expose the battery. Be careful when opening the case and don't drop or pour any liquids into the fob as they could harm the electronic components within.

Broken Keys

It can be a traumatic experience to have your keys taken from your vehicle, especially if you do not have an extra. Every Saab since 1995 has been required to have an immobilizer in the vehicle, which makes it virtually impossible to steal your car without a special key. The key must have a transponder to allow it to start the engine and open your doors. The key also needs a transmitter/transponder chip that needs to be matched with the car's computer module in order to work. This can only be done by a dealer using the specialized tool called Tech-2 Tech-2 or another similar kind of software.

If your key is broken in your ignition lock, make sure you don't attempt to remove it by yourself, since this may damage the lock and cause problems. When you try to force a key or lock that is broken out, it typically breaks the metal blade of the key or the mechanism that locks. This can be much more costly than hiring a locksmith replace the key.

Replacement

Saab owners who purchased their Saab from 1994 onwards are advised to have two working keys for their car. Replacing only one key is costly and difficult. The dealer will have to replace the CIM (Column Integration Module) or TWICE (Theft Warning Integrated Central Electronics), depending on the model, and also the key itself. In addition it must be programmed to work with the new module. Claimed-new key from aftermarket sellers is typically not properly programmed, and will not program correctly when you require of one.

It is not unusual that the battery wears out on a keyfob following a few use years, especially if the fob is used frequently for locking and unlocking a car. The replacement of the battery on most SAAB 9-3 models can be done easily and doesn't require any special tools.

A mobile SAAB locksmith can usually do this for 75% less than a dealer would charge for the same service. Locksmiths do not need to replace the computer in your car either and can usually modify your existing EEPROM to accept the new key. This saves money since a brand new car computer can be expensive.
