The iRobot Roomba 980, the most recent of a series of top-of-the-line robot vacuums, is an essential for any modern home. It also has the feature of smart mapping which uses multiple sensors to identify the areas of your home that need attention and create a cleaning path around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of maneuvering around toys placed on the floor, or furniture legs that stick out of the ground. It also has a sensor that snaps Roomba back to reality when it begins to wander away from its original position.

iRobot also added a set of rollers underneath the Roomba which do not have bristles, and therefore are more likely to avoid the tangles that previous models. They're also a bit taller than previous rollers and can better fit under low couches and beds and are designed to help this model navigate more easily across different flooring kinds.

The Roomba 980 differs from other high-end models by its brand new dirt detection feature, which uses a camera in order to identify dirt that has been embedded. This is a significant improvement over the previous model which relied on the use of a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover to bounce around the room and scrub the area three times, at different angles.

In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. Its score on the low pile carpet was very good and it got a very high score on mid pile, too. It did a decent job of removing pet hair, but it was struggling with very long and thick pet fur that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the top performing robots we've reviewed despite the slight limitations. It's also not as expensive as top-of-the-line models. It has a lot of features we would expect from a top model but does not have all the fancy apps or smart home integration you'd see in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and get running right away. After taking off the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from the undercarriage, all you need to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its large "Clean" button and let it get to work. It will automatically return to its dock when the battery runs out or it's full of debris. It also has indicators on the top to indicate when the bin is full, it's time to recharge, or its Wi-Fi signal is lost.
